DUBLIN LIVE ART FESTIVAL 2016: WILL TAKE PLACE IN MART RATHMINES DUBLIN - AUGUST

Rathmines, Dublin 10-14 August 2016

Taking place over five days and nights in MART, an artist-led, self-sustaining organisation for the development and promotion of contemporary art, DLAF16 will immerse you in this intriguing site and fascinating art form.

Our theme for this year’s Dublin Live Art Festival 2016 is the Politics of Freedom and we have invited artists whose work has a political edge to it to take part and to present pieces that deal with the subject of freedom and the limitations put on us. We will have artists responding to ideas around race, queer and feminist politics as well as workshops and events to explore ideas of protest, otherness and being outside the box.

In this year of the centenary of our own Rising as well as international instability and Brexit, our DLAF16 artists will investigate concepts of  “the personal is political” to reflect the unrepresented through live art and our connections between personal experience and larger social and political structures.

Be excited. Be inspired. Be there.

AS PART OF DUBLIN LIVE ART FESTIVAL 2016 P.A. LIVE IN ASSOC WITH STILL FILMS IS PROUD TO PRESENT: THE FUTURE HISTORIES DOCUMENTARY SCREENING

Taking place at MART, Rathmines on Wednesday 10 August at 19.00

We would like to welcome all to the premiere of this exciting film documenting this momentous day and ambitious exhibition.

During the celebrations marking the centenary of the 1916 Rising, one of our most significant historical buildings, Kilmainham Gaol, played host to Future Histories, a day-long event featuring a collection of Ireland’s top performance artists.

On May 21 this year, as part of the Arts Council’s ART: 2016 programme for Ireland 2016, the cells of Kilmainham were once again occupied, but this time rather than rebels, 16 Irish performance artists were commissioned to create new work for members of the public to enjoy in this unique historical setting.

The Future Histories documentary screening will be followed by a drinks reception.

BELFAST EXPOSED PHOTOGRAPHY GALLERY: EXHIBIT WORKS BY MATTHEW FINN JOANNA PIOTROWSKA AND TEREZA ZELENKOVA

Dates:- 5 August to 1 October 2016

Belfast Exposed are pleased to present this group exhibition by the recipients of the first national Jerwood/Photoworks Awards, a scheme that recognises outstanding new photographic talent.

Three artists; Matthew Finn, Joanna Piotrowska and Tereza Zelenkova were selected from an open call for applications. Each has received an award of 5,000GBP to support the making of new work for this exhibition, with a significant production fund and advice from a pool of thirteen Mentors including Alec Soth, Gillian Wearing, Broomberg & Chanarin and Michael Mack as well as curatorial advice from both of the award giving organisations.

Matthew Finn has been photographing his mother in a series of collaborative portraits since 1987. Mother draws us into the fascinating dynamic of mother and son offering an intense and honest view of this most natural and universal of bonds. His Jerwood/Photoworks Award has enabled Matthew to revisit this series at an emotional time that has seen his mother, Jean, move from her family home into an assisted living residence. Jean’s mental health has changed her role in the portraits from active participant to one of an observed subject; widening the focus of his images towards objects and metaphor.

Joanna Piotrowska’s work explores anxiety and the effects of global and political events on the individual. Counteracting the passive role encouraged of adolescent girls, Joanna has enlisted young women to recreate poses from self-defence manuals. She offers the viewer a reclamation of the private body from the public sphere, and re-contextualising these poses within a domestic setting, feeds our fascination with the uncanny or the unheimlich.

Tereza Zelenkova has travelled to her native Czech Republic to explore themes of history, local legend and folklore. Tereza’s Jerwood/Photoworks Award enabled her to visit numerous locations, but the resulting images seem themselves out of place and time. Her eerily beautiful, black and white photographs of woodlands, stone structures and relics form their own dream-like, subconscious world, where stories fuel the viewer’s interpretation.

The Jerwood/Photoworks Awards are a new collaboration between Jerwood Charitable Foundation and Photoworks, supported by Arts Council England. Other touring partners include Jerwood Space London; Impressions Gallery, Bradford and Open Eye Gallery, Liverpool. This exhibition was made possible by the generous support of Arts Council Northern Ireland and Belfast City Council.

Join us for the opening on 4 August, 7-9pm
