NIKON INTRODUCED THE D5 AND THE D500 IN JANUARY AND ANNOUNCE ITS PRESENCE AT PHOTOFEST

THE NIKON D5: OUTPERFORM OUTDO OUTLAST - THE D5 RAISES THE BAR FOR FX PERFORMANCE

The most powerful digital SLR flagship in the Nikon line-up leads the pack with unmatched speed and precision

Nikon Corporation announced in January the new Nikon D5, a FX-format flagship digital SLR camera that challenges photographers to outperform their highest standards, and set new benchmarks for speed, accuracy and image quality. Expanding the possibilities of image capture for professional photographers, the new D5 places the needs of the professional at the centre of innovation with features that enable smooth and reliable responsiveness to a wide variety of scenes and subjects.

From the refined acquisition of subjects in motion, to 4K video in UHD, the D5 creates opportunities for dauntless photographers working in demanding shooting environments to push their gear to new limits. With a next generation AF system the intelligent and versatile tracking of moving subjects enables the richness and realism of every split-second moment to be captured. The D5 boasts a wide range of ISO sensitivity up to 102400, expandable to Hi 5 (ISO 3280000 equivalent) — the most expanded sensitivity range in Nikon history — for astronomical twilight with minimum illumination, capturing details and colours beyond the limits of the human eye.

THE NIKON D500: FLAGSHIP DX-FORMAT DIGITAL SLR CAMERA OFFERING THE SUPREME PERFORMANCE & LIGHTWEIGHT BODY

Nikon Corporation in January announced the release of the D500, a DX-format digital SLR camera that packs the incredible performance of the D5, Nikon's flagship FX-format model, into an agile body.

The Nikon D500 incorporates the same powerful 153-point AF system as the D5, ensuring precise subject acquisition even during high-speed continuous shooting at approx. 10 fps. It supports 4K UHD movies, meeting the demands of multimedia professionals, while the new EXPEED 5 image-processing engine enables it to deliver high-quality images and movies and realizes a wide sensitivity range from ISO 100 to 51200, expandable to Hi 5 (ISO 1640000 equivalent).

The D500 combines the agility of the DX system with superior usability. It employs a touch-screen, tilting monitor, and features SnapBridge support, which enhances the value of your images via constant wireless connection with a smart device. The camera is compatible with the newly released MB-D17 Multi-Power Battery Pack (optional), which can be used with various types of battery.

GALLERY OF PHOTOGRAPHY IRELAND EXHIBIT REFLECTING 1916

Gallery of Photography programme includes curated photographic exhibition, street-based art installations, outdoor projections and public talks and tours.

Reflecting 1916  Exhibition - continues until 1 May 2016

Reflecting 1916features photographs taken by eyewitnesses to this pivotal period in Ireland’s history, a number of which are being shown in public for the first time.

A centrepiece installation of large-scale photos captures the destruction of Dublin and offers viewers a dramatic, immersive experience. This is contextualised by explorations of the use of photography to represent the idealism and growing militarism of the revolutionary generation.

The wider use of photography as a vital tool for propaganda focusses on Roger Casement and his use of photography to highlight crimes against humanity. Casement’s own documentary photographs from the Putamayo offer an insight into his evolution from British imperialist to Irish revolutionary. A further sequence includes images of the widows and orphans of the Rising that were reproduced in the Catholic Bulletin in 1916, highlighting how photography was used to sway public opinion in the immediate aftermath. The final section looks at how the Rising has been represented in subsequent commemorations. Accompanied by a catalogue with essays contributed by leading writers and historians, Reflecting 1916 is an exploration of the role played by photography in shaping our memory of the Easter Rising.

The exhibition draws from our rich photographic heritage held in national collections and private albums and includes photographs generously contributed by the Capuchins Ireland Archive; Dublin City Library and Archive; Irish Military Archives; Kilmainham Gaol; The National Library of Ireland /National Photographic Archive; The National Museum of Ireland; Pearse Museum, St. Enda’s; RTE Archives; Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland; Trinity College Archives, UCD Archives and archival images on loan from John Osman.

BELFAST EXPOSED PHOTOGRAPHY GALLERY EXHIBIT WORKS BY PETER DRESSLER

‘Seeing With Your Eyes’: The Photographs of Peter Dressler 1972 - 2003

Opening this week - 1 April to 14 May 2016

Peter Dressler (b.1942) is an Austrian photographer whose work has been gaining international prominence since his death in 2013. Working in partnership with Museum der Moderne Salzburg, Belfast Exposed will present the first major solo exhibition of the artist's work in Ireland.

Dressler’s performance-based, staged photographic series’ involve temporary and often humorous interventions into a range of public and private spaces and everyday urban situations. Within each series Dressler himself adopts the identity of a subject closely observed from his environment; a conscientious museum attendant, a bored aristocrat, a frustrated businessman on a sales trip etc. Using sets, costumes and props Dressler creates a rich visual language and builds complex layers of narrative around each subject. By doing so he plays with the relationship between photographer and subject and probes the nature of the human condition through his character’s familiar and often irrational responses to a variety of environments and contexts.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a publication written by curator Margit Zuckriegl and translated by Lisa Rosenblatt.

Artist Biography- Peter Dressler (1942-2013) lived and worked in Vienna, Austria. He studied painting from 1966 to 1971 at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna under Gustav Hessing and taught at the same academy from 1972 – 2008. He has been exhibited by Camera Austria and Fotohof, Salzburg, among others. He is published by Fotohof and over 200 of his photographs are held in the collection of the Ministry for Education, Art and Culture in Vienna. He was awarded the Rupertinum Photo Prize (Salzburg, Austria) in 2001: the Higashikawa Prize (photo festival Higashikawa, Japan) in 2011; and the Grand Austrian State Prize for Artistic Photography (Vienna, Austria) in 2013.

Acknowledgements- This exhibition has been generously supported by Federal Chancellery of Austria (BKA), Arts Council of Northern Ireland, Belfast City Council. We would like to thank our partners Museum der Moderne Salzburg, curator Margit Zuckriegl and translator Lisa Rosenblatt.
